Overview
The client is one of the world’s largest producers of nitrogen and phosphate. With 1,500 locations across North America, Australia and South America, and more than 3,300 crop advisors, they are the world's largest direct-to-grower provider of products, services and solutions.
By 2030, this company aims to lead the next wave of agricultural evolution by reducing emissions at their manufacturing facilities by 30%.
In industrial manufacturing environments, it is critical to remain proactive and prophylactic to avoid disasters or unplanned shutdowns caused by equipment breaking or failing inspection. To keep equipment up to code, regularly scheduled turnarounds (TARs) are conducted. A TAR includes licensing, commissioning, a shutdown to inspect and clean equipment, and reliability testing to ensure everything is working post-shutdown.
When it came time to kick off a CapEx project at their nitrogen plant in Lima, Ohio, the company saw a perfect opportunity to implement some critical changes to help hit their 2030 reduced emissions target.
This multi-year, $100 million capital project would require high level engineering, project management and project controls talent.
Key Challenges
Lima is a relatively small town in rural Ohio, meaning the company would need to look well beyond the city limits to find the high-level engineering talent required to run this type of capital project. Those individuals would need to be willing to relocate to Lima for two+ years.
The company realized they needed a partner with nationwide reach and a deep understanding of the industrial manufacturing space that could help source this talent.
The Solution
Planet Forward quickly emerged as the sole supplier of project management talent, finding contractors to maintain complex tasks and schedules. Planet was able to source this talent and assist in getting them relocated for the 2+ year contract.
As of publication, the client is 18 months into the project and all three Planet Forward contractors are playing a critical role in ensuring the project’s success. Essential to cost and schedule driven Capital Projects, these individuals are tasked with coordinating with the Major Projects team, Project Controls, Process Engineering and Construction groups for assistance in project development, planning and execution.
The Results
Upon completion, the Lima facility will have implemented nitrous oxide (N2O) abatement, energy efficiency improvements, carbon capture, utilization and storage at strategically located assets, and cogeneration projects that use natural gas for lower GHG electricity generation and waste heat recovery.
The client’s $100 million investment into this plant is expected to add 800 jobs, providing a boost to Lima’s local economy.
